Restore a user's Google Drive files

Restore a user's Google Drive files

Donal Trung 1:48 PM Add Comment
Admins can now restore a given user’s deleted Google Drive files for a specified date range. This helps ensure that, if a user accidentally deletes important files, those files are not permanently lost. The feature pertains to files that have been emptied from the Trash only. Files still in the Trash can be easily recovered by the user.

Enhancements to the SMTP relay service

Enhancements to the SMTP relay service

Donal Trung 12:58 PM Add Comment
We are launching several enhancements to the SMTP relay service. Admins will benefit from the following five key features:
  • Multiple authentication configurations: Admins can now configure multiple sets of authentication rules. For instance, you can specify that messages sent from one IP address are always allowed, messages from another IP address are only allowed if encrypted with TLS, and messages from another IP address range require SMTP AUTH.
  • SMTP AUTH: This newly supported authentication method uses Google “application-specific passwords” to allow admins to configure clients to authenticate to the relay service. This feature is available for registered Google Apps users only.
  • IP range description field: To manage IP addresses more efficiently, admins can enter descriptions in text fields for each IP address or range that you use to set authentication rules.
  • Selective enable/disable of IP ranges: Admins can selectively enable/disable IP ranges approved for relay as needed

Accidentally deleted a user? Undelete user now available!

Accidentally deleted a user? Undelete user now available!

Donal Trung 4:06 PM Add Comment
Our customers have frequently requested the ability to restore recently deleted users. Starting today, admins can do so in the control panel. The process will recover most if not all data.

- You must have super administrator privileges.
- You can only restore users that have been deleted in the past five days.
- The deleted user name must not match an existing group name or another active user's email address or alias. If it does, you'll see a 'username already exists' error message.
- You can't exceed your maximum number of user licenses. If you try to restore a deleted user when you don't have an available license, you'll see a 'domain is over user limit' error message.
- The option to undelete users is only visible in the top-level organization even if the deleted user was in a sub organization.

New way to manage Control Panel administrators roles and privileges

New way to manage Control Panel administrators roles and privileges

Donal Trung 9:16 AM Add Comment
Previously, administrator privileges were assigned on a per-user basis. As a replacement, you can now create "roles" such as Help Desk, Services, and Groups, or create your own custom role.

If you assigned delegated administrator privileges to users before administrator roles were available, Google Apps created roles for those settings. These custom roles have the name role_useremail, where useremail is the email address of the user to whom the privileges were assigned.

Multiple improvements for easier email activation for Google Apps domains

Multiple improvements for easier email activation for Google Apps domains

Donal Trung 10:12 AM Add Comment
We have recently made a number of changes to make activating the email service even easier. These include:

- MX record setup is now fully unified in the Setup guide providing guided help for the customer through various email setup options such as direct to Google, Postini, or mail routing in a piloting scenario.
- Domains can now directly use Postini without setting up Gmail first.
- Domains can now use Google provided test aliases, test-google-a.com, for as long as desired. Previously these aliases were removed once email was activated. Administrators will also have the option to activate or deactivate the test alias under "Domain Settings." Domains with Postini can also opt-in to keeping the test alias upon Postini activation.
- The domain’s current MX records will now be displayed in the Control Panel under "Email Settings" and in the Setup guide. Showing these MX records in the Control Panel will help administrators check their status of email activation or incorrect MX records post-setup.

Donal Trung 6:17 PM Add Comment
Google Apps Mobile Management is a set of device management controls integrated into the Google Apps control panel. It covers Android and Google Sync devices, which include iOS, Windows Phone, and other smartphones and tablets using Microsoft® Exchange ActiveSync®.

With Mobile Management, you can manage your mobile fleet with the following features:
- Granular policies: Configure mobile settings at the organizational unit level
- Device activation: Control what devices can connect to your users' Google Apps data
- Device console: View all mobile devices in your domain connecting with Google Sync or Android Sync.

In addition to these mobile settings, you can view graphs about mobile usage and see mobile trends in your organization in the Reports tab of your control panel.

Editions included:
Google Apps for Business, Government and Education

Languages included:
US English Only (Next Generation Control Panel)

How to access what's new:
Mobile Management is in the administrator control panel under ‘Settings’ -> ‘Mobile'

Note: Android devices need to have the Google Apps Device Policy app installed to show up under the Devices tab. Send this sample email to your users instructing them to download the Device Policy app before you check 'Enforce policies on Android devices' or 'Enable device activation.'
- Devices not supported: BlackBerry devices and devices connecting via IMAP or POP because these do not use Google Sync (Microsoft® Exchange ActiveSync®) or Android Sync.
- Users who can already sync with your Google Apps domain will still be able to sync with your Google Apps domain. After November 14, new Android users will need to install Device Policy if you enforce device policies or enable activation.
- Administrators can audit mobile apps installed on Android devices that access Google Apps data (see the Devices tab), but cannot audit mobile apps on other operating systems like iOS and Windows Phone.
